Morgan Island Sand Bar Party August 10, 2019
Morgan Island - also known as Monkey Island - has a sand bar just off the shore. It will ground a boater who isn't paying attention as the sand is just a couple feet below the water at high tide. When the low tide approaches, the sand bar rises from the waves and creates the perfect spot for about a hundred Yacht Club members from Fripp, Dataw and Edisto to gather, set up tents and chairs, have lunch and party.
The weather cooperated for the Fripper and our private boats on the trip over and back, plus provided a wonderful backdrop for our party and some relaxing in the shade of umbrellas and the cool waters of the Morgan River.

Bull Point Outing and Picnic June 15, 2019
Just a boat ride away. South of Prichards, on Caper's Island is the stretch of sand called Bull Point. Sea breezes and gentle waves with a panoramic view of the Atlantic, Trenchard's Inlet, and St. Phillips Island - the perfect place for a picnic. Yacht Club members could take their own boats or ride on the Fripper II. Lunch by Harold's Chef Services.

Pub Night at the Community Center - February 23, 2019
The first event of the 2019 Schedule was Pub Night, complete with a fish fry and bread pudding desert by Harold's Catering. The Yacht Club provided a cold keg of Sam Adams. Our Base Captain, Dolf Dunn, and Assistant, Sherry Sievert - along with a large cadre of volunteers - organized and presented a wonderful night of dinner, conversation and trivia competition. Check out the food, festive decorations and the intent looks of concentration as members try to figure out answers to the three rounds of tricky trivia questions. (How long is that alligator statue at the Beach Club?)

Morgan Island Sandbar Outing - June 23, 2018. Joined by Edisto Yacht Club and Dataw Yacht Club - Fripp Island Yacht Club declared the Morgan River Sand Bar to be "Yacht Club Territory" for the day. We had lunch, mighty fine Monkey Juice Punch, and great camaraderie from the time the Sand Bar emerged from the waters until the tide returned and the Fripper and our boats departed for home. We will have more pictures after the fourth of July holiday, but the one below gives you a good idea - there were a lot of folks having fun there on the sand.
If you have pictures to share, email them to michael.beach@prodigy.net or call me to coordinate sharing the files - 303-437-5746 - and I'll add them to this posting.

A.C.E. Basin Trip - June 14, 2018. We took the Fripper and a few boats to the million-acre nature reserve where the Ashepoo, Combahee and Edisto rivers form a natural estuary that drains into St. Helena sound. The DNR Ranger met us at Bennetts Point and came aboard to give an interesting presentation while we had lunch. Another highlight was the sighting of monkeys on Morgan Island.

Boat Parade - Friday December 1st. The annual Boat Parade was a joint production by Fripp Island Yacht Club and Fripp Resort. Eight decorated boats, plus two from Sea Rescue, paraded past the docks at Fripp Island Marina as darkness fell. The weather was perfect and the attendance was excellent. Complimentary food was served at Peg Legs and the bar was open, followed by music and dancing plus a golf cart decorating contest. Thanks to Fleet Captain Danny Atkinson for a terrific evening. Photos by Kelly Taylor and Michael Beach.
Annual Meeting and Pot Luck Dinner - Saturday November 4th. A sell out crowd at the Community Centre. Highlights were the fabulous prime rib prepared by Harold's Catering, the many side dishes brought by the Members, and the fact that this is one of those events where food and beverages are provided at no cost to Members. It almost seems to make up for the short business meeting. During that meeting, reports were made on on club finances by the Treasurer, previous events by the Fleet Captain and Base Captain, plus comments by the Commodore. New Yacht Club officers were elected by the membership. Then, thankfully, back to food and beverages. Yum! Photos by Ann O'Melia.
Quite a few of our Yacht Club members did not go out of town for this once-in-a-lifetime (or maybe twice or three times in a lifetime?) solar eclipse. So, we gathered for an impromptu party on the beach. Clouds prevented a complete viewing but there were moments when the clouds parted and we could see the initial bite the shadow of the earth took from the sun, the 97% almost-totality, and the return of the sun to again warm our beach. It was surprising to some how long it took.

Golf Tournament and Dinner Party - the Par-Tee! Thursday, May 11th. The Golf Tournament and the Dinner Party were both well attended this year. Dan Bialas and his crew of volunteers planned and implemented another great spring event. The weather cooperated, several of our putts actually went in, Fripp Island Resort provided the dinner buffet and the Goodnight Irene Band played on during the evening Party. What fun!
Blessing of the Fleet and Dataw Fish Fry - Thursday, April 20th. The first boating event of the season was truly blessed, with great weather, a Dataw Gazebo that is all spruced up and repaired following the Hurricane and an excellent turn out of 90 members. We were joined by members of the Dataw Yacht Club board for our traditional fish fry, served up by Harry Merrill, Jr. of Harold's Catering. Betsy Hammet, Chaplin, blessed our boats at the Fripp Island Marina, then we traveled by land yacht this year to Dataw since their docks have not yet been replaced. Even the Ancient Commodore turned out, all cleaned up and wearing his new blue blazer - courtesy of Jan Manning.
The Ancient Commodore, all cleaned up and decked out in his new nautical blue blazer. Ready to party on!
Community Center Pub Party - Friday, February 17th. Draft beer, British Fish and Chips and Trivia prizes. An exceptional event and a great turn our for the first Yacht Club event of the 2017 season. Base Captain, Rich Marquart welcomed us and was MC for the evening festivities.

Commodore's Ball - Saturday, January 14th. What a sparkling evening it was! Fripp Island Yacht Club members traveled all the way to Vegas! (without leaving Fripp Island) for our annual Commodore's Ball. Members hit the jackpot with dinner and dancing to Target The Band, won fabulous prizes with raffle tickets from the Prize Wheel and enjoyed celebrity visits from Elvis, Dean Marin and the ever-present Cher.
Robbie White transitioned to Rear Commodore and our new Commodore for 2017, Dave Manning, took the helm.

Boat Parade - Friday, December 2nd. Boats of the Fripp Island Yacht Club were joined by the Fripper, Fripp Island Excursion boats and two Fripp Island Sea Rescue boats for the 13th Annual Boat Parade. We had great weather as darkness fell and spectators gathered on the dock and around the Fripp Island Marina to view the illuminated and decorated boats parade past the crowd. Following the parade everyone enjoyed free appetizers, a cash bar and DJ Jessee at the Bonita Boat House restaurant. Fripp Island Yacht Club and the Fripp Island Resort co-sponsor this annual event so everyone on the island was welcome to attend.

Morgan River Sand Bar Extravaganza - Saturday, July 30. For the third year in a row, as the Sand Bar emerged from the Morgan River's receding tide, the Fripp Island and Dataw Island Yacht Clubs met to party. Fripper transported both Fripp and Dataw members and there were plenty of member boats anchored along the sand bar. Lunch and Monkey Punch were excellent.

Edisto Yacht Club Lunch - Friday, July 22. One fine Friday in July, the Fripp Island Yacht Club Board took two boats out the Morgan River, across the Atlantic and into Edisto for lunch with the Edisto Yacht Club Board. They have a fine facility and we had a great lunch as we talked about the possibility of join events in the future.

Golf Tournament and Party - Monday, May 5. This year the annual Frip Island Yacht Club Golf Tournament and the evening Party were held as two separate events so golfers and non-golfers could decide to attend one, the other, or both of these great events. Golf was held at the Fripp Island Ocean Creek course. The evening event was a dinner party at the Creek House with the Irene Goodnight band.

Boat Inspections - Thursday, April 7. The US Sail and Power Squadron provided free boat inspections for our members at the Fripp Island Marina. Boaters that passed were awarded the 2016 Coast Guard inspection sticker to display on their boats. Following the inspections we all relaxed at Peg Legs and enjoyed lunch during a training course on effective anchoring.

Oyster and Pig Roast at the Creek House - Thursday, March 10. The oysters were hot and smokey, with a taste of the sea and a longing for hot red sauce, Just Right! Over 100 members enjoyed both oyster and the pulled pork with all the fixings and desert. The Yacht Club supplied the beverages and the spring weather was very accommodating. The second outing for this season was a great success.

Pub Party at the Community Centre - Friday Feb 12.
For the first Yacht Club event of the season we gathered at the cozy Lost Ship Inn for an evening of food, fun and beverage. There was a wonderful Pub Buffet, draft Boddingtons Pub Beer, plus a darts competition and British trivia. Background music by British Invasion bands and a slide show of images from the British Isles added to the fun theme. A great time was had by all.

Commodore's Ball - Saturday, January 16. An Evening of Elegance and Intrigue, it was indeed. After making your way through the thick London fog, into the secret phone booth stairway entrance, you arrived at the MI6 Building, HQ of the British Secret Intelligence Service. There you were greeted with your choice of a martini (shaken, not stirred) or a lemon drop cocktail.
Villians of every description peered in from the night through the windows. And of course, ever watchful there standing in the corner was Bond, James Bond.
There are over a hundred marvelous photos of the event on the site now, take your time to scroll down and enjoy.

Holiday Luncheon - Thursday, December 10. This year we tried a new venue for our annual Holiday Luncheon: The Tavern in Royal Pine on Lady's Island. They provided a great seafood buffet to rave reviews from our Members. Santa visited to help the Salvation Army pick up our Toys for Tots donations. What a great event to close out the Yacht Club calendar year.
Christmas Boat Parade - Friday December 4, 2015. Mother Nature didn't cooperate this year and for the first time in a long time we had to cancel the parade of decorated boats. However, prizes were awarded by the Resort for Holiday Golf Cart Decoration and Holiday Home Decoration and the Party was moved to the Boat House. Great snacks, DJ Jesse rocked the tunes and holiday cheer abounded.

Tee Cooper's "Angel Cart" was decorated as an angel in memory of Al Cooper and others from Fripp Island that have moved on to Heaven. Some of us wanted to try out our angelic poses with the cart. What do you think, can we get past St. Peter?

Cars with additional members met us there. Conversation ensued and a great buffet lunch was enjoyed before departing for the trip back to Fripp. On the way home boats took the south and east route past Port Royal and up Station Creek. Beautiful weather, outstanding food, great company and time on the water. What could be better?

Charleston Overnight Boat Trip - May 12 to 14, 2015
A small but hardy group of 8 members on two boats made the trip from Fripp Island to the Ashley Marina in Charleston. We started the festivities after docking and checking in with appetizers and drinks on the Courtyard Marriott deck overlooking the pool and the marina. That evening we went downtown for a wonderful dinner at Magnolias - the food and friendship was marvelous. The next day folks were on their own to explore the city, shop and have breakfast or lunch at any of the hundreds of great eating places Charleston has to offer. Later in the evening we boarded a bus that whisked us in style to Patriots Point to board the Spirit Line for our dinner cruise around Charleston Harbor. After check out the next day we boarded our vessels and fought the wind and waves back. A bit damp, but with a sense of satisfaction and some great memories we made our way back to Fripp Island Marina. Check out the pictures.

Boats with Yacht Club members departed the Fripp Island Marina and also from Spring Island to meet in the river near Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort to watch the Air Show. Boat Inspections - April 9, 2015
The Beaufort Power Squadron provided Fripp Island Yacht Club complimentary annual boat inspections. Not only do the inspection stickers look nice on your boat, they also let the Coast Guard know that you have taken necessary actions to comply with Coast Guard regulations and may be less likely to stop you for a courtesy inspection. A dozen boats were inspected followed by lunch and a safety briefing at Peg Legs.

Holiday Boat Parade. December 11, 2014
The FIYC Boat Parade was bigger and better this year with more boats, more food, more lights and many more people attending the event. This year saw more collaboration between the Fripp Island Resort and FIYC to produce these results. Perhaps next year can build even further on this success.

PIG AND OYSTER ROAST. March 13, 2014
The unusually cold weather of this Fripp winter gave us a break with a warming spell for our ever popular Pig and Oyster Roast at the Fripp Island Creek House. Nothing says spring quite like hot and smokey oysters followed up by a bit of BBQ pork and a brew or two. A great time was had by all - accompanied by some low country smooth music from the boom box.

MARDI GRAS PARTY. February 22, 2014
A great time was had by all at the Mardi Gras. With wonderful New Orleans style food by Harold's Catering and friendly chatter above the background zydeco and jazz. Just so you know, according to Wickipedia: Though disputed, it is commonly suggested that "zydeco" derives from the French phrase Les haricots ne sont pas salés, which, when spoken in the Louisiana Creole French, sounds as "leh-zy-dee-co nay sohn pah salay". This literally translates as "the snap beans aren't salty" but idiomatically as "I have no spicy news for you." Alternatively the term has been given the meaning "I'm so poor, I can't afford any salt meat for the beans." The earliest recorded use of the term may have been the country and western musical group called Zydeco Skillet Lickers who recorded the song It Ain't Gonna Rain No Mo in 1929.

Commodore's ball. January 18, 2014
Out with the old, in with the new! Whether you consider this the last event of 2013 or the first event of the New Year, it's certain that this is the most elegant event on the FIYC calendar. This year's theme was, "Changes in Latitudes" and party-goers were greeted downstairs by snow flakes and snow-covered pines. But upstairs it was all parrots and palm trees. Dancing to Target, the Band.
